Exemplary Forestry
Exemplary Forestry is a forest management approach created by New England Forestry Foundation (NEFF) that prioritizes forests’ long-term health and outlines the highest standards of sustainability currently available to the region’s forest owners for three key goals: enhancing the role forests can play to mitigate climate change, improving wildlife habitat and biodiversity, and growing and harvesting more sustainably produced wood. Visit our Exemplary Forestry webpage for more information.
Exemplary Forestry in the Acadian Forest
NEFF continually strives to practice the gold standard of sustainable forest management, and we began to document just what this Exemplary Forestry looks like by defining specific metrics and desired outcomes tailored to the Acadian Forest of northern New England. This document provides an in-depth look at Exemplary Forestry practices for that region, and provides a host of background information and research.
The Standards and Metrics of Acadian Exemplary Forestry
This one-page document briefly explains how Exemplary Forestry would be implemented in the Acadian Forest Region, and lists the standards and metrics specific to this landscape.
Exemplary Forestry for Central and Transition Hardwoods
In winter 2021, NEFF released the standards and metrics for Central and Transition Hardwoods Exemplary Forestry. Get a feel for the technical details of how Exemplary Forestry should be implemented in much of southern New England, and read landscape-specific standards and metrics that show the practice’s impact. The overview is one page in length and is accompanied by an additional page of citations.

Guide to Sustainable Forest Management
This document was compiled by NEFF’s lead forester and provides an in-depth look at how NEFF practices forestry on the more than 38,000 acres of land we own and manage. Topics include the specific goals we hope to accomplish through sustainable forestry, silviculture techniques and a breakdown of harvest types, and general land management policies.
