New England Forestry Foundation (NEFF) has permanently conserved more than 1.2 million total acres of forestland, the equivalent of nearly two times the size of Rhode Island.

NEFF made history by conserving 762,000 forestland acres in 2001 through the Pingree Forest Partnership; just three years later, NEFF conserved another 335,000 acres through the Downeast Lakes Forestry Partnership—and those projects account for just a few of NEFF’s easements in the state, and none of its remarkable Community Forests. Vermont’s highlighted Community Forests offer inspiring mountain views and exceptional recreational opportunities. Braintree Mountain Forest is a particular standout as the only NEFF Community Forest to offer downhill skiing, specifically downhill backcountry skiing in partnership with Ridgeline Outdoor Collective.

As NEFF was founded in Massachusetts in 1944, it’s no surprise NEFF has conserved so many forests here. What’s remarkable is how diverse they are in geography, geology, wildlife and more.

NEFF has a smaller conservation footprint in Connecticut than other states, but that shouldn’t stop website visitors or outdoor enthusiasts from taking a look. NEFF has conserved some truly fascinating forestlands in New England’s southernmost state.
