In partnership with Rochester Area Sports Trail Alliance (RASTA), New England Forestry Foundation is excited to offer backcountry skiing opportunities at Braintree Mountain Forest in Braintree, VT. Paul Kendall and Sharon Rives donated Braintree Mountain Forest to NEFF in 2013, permanently conserving the working forest. The property covers 1,547 acres of the Braintree Range, including four peaks reaching 3,030 feet. In the fall of 2014, RASTA board member Zac Freeman and 37 volunteers teamed up with NEFF’s Director of Forest Stewardship Chris Pryor and forester John McLain to selectively remove saplings to open up trails and glades for backcountry skiing. Volunteers helped maintain trails and expand ski glade areas in the fall of 2015
“This NEFF-RASTA partnership is the future: it could mark the beginning of a new era in which communities and land conservationists team up to blaze a new network of recreational trails,” explains David Goodman, a Vermont-based writer and the author of Best Backcountry Skiing in the Northeast.
The trailhead and parking lot are located at the intersection of Riford Brook Road and Laroque Road in Braintree, VT. This winter, grab your skis and head to Braintree Mountain Forest to earn your turns!
