Walk the Woods, See Exemplary Forestry in Action!

Join New England Forestry Foundation (NEFF) for a scenic and immersive woods walk through the recently harvested Bliss Woods Preserve in Freeport, Maine, where you’ll witness sustainable forestry in action! This approximately two-hour guided hike will offer a first-hand look at Exemplary Forestry practices, from improving forest health to supporting local communities. Ask questions, explore the landscape, and discover how NEFF is shaping the future of New England’s forests. This event will take place rain or shine!

What to Expect

  • Moderate Hike: Approximately 1 mile through varying terrain, including well-worn trails, exposed roots, branches, rocks, and harvest debris
  • Sustained Grades: The hike will include prolonged inclines of up to 10%
  • Hands-On Workshop (Optional): Bring pruning tools (folding hand saw, loppers, gloves, safety glasses)
  • Expert Guidance: A licensed forester will explain sustainable harvesting techniques and answer questions

Learn More and Get Directions

To learn more about Bliss Woods Preserve, visit our Forest Stories web page.

Please note: There will be no parking available at the Bliss Woods trailhead. The lot has recently been improved, but the ground remains soft, and to prevent ruts from forming, it will remain closed until conditions improve.

Attendees may instead park on the shoulder of South Freeport Road, where the Freeport Police Department has authorized parking for the morning of the woods walk. This is the most direct option for accessing the trailhead.

If you’re not comfortable parking on the shoulder, additional parking is available at Whole Dog Camp at Bliss Woods (136 S Freeport Rd, Freeport, ME 04032). From there, it’s approximately a 500-foot walk along South Freeport Road to the trailhead.

This is a unique opportunity to witness Exemplary Forestry firsthand, engage with NEFF leadership, and explore how forests can be managed for both ecological health and economic benefit. If you’re ready for an active and engaging walk in the woods, we hope to see you there!
