To answer the question of how much more carbon New England forests could store while maintaining harvest, the New England Forestry Foundation (NEFF) compared average merchantable timber stocking on private land in each county of New England against what NEFF has approximated as “ideal” stocking given the diversity of stand sizes recommended by ecologists to benefit biodiversity while producing timber.
