About Philanthropy at New England Forestry Foundation

NEFF’s development program has grown organically over the past 25 years. It started as a one-person department with support from volunteers and increased its capacity with staff and outside consultants in 2001 when NEFF and its Board raised the funds to close the largest forestland conservation easement in the United States. Since that time, the organization has developed a more intentional and effective annual giving strategy. With the hiring of current Executive Director Bob Perschel more than ten years ago, philanthropic program delivery has continued to gain momentum and the organization has attracted both more supporters and a several-fold increase in philanthropic support.

The organization is in a period of growth, having nearly doubled staffing and budget since the start of 2013. More attention has been placed on building strong, climate change focused projects and utilizing the content expertise of senior staff to increase fundraising capacity. NEFF is also a leader in analyzing and synthesizing information on the region’s forests to not only illuminate opportunities and problems but also inform policy on how to improve forest management, both on its own lands and in the region.

In January 2022 NEFF closed out the first phase of a multi-year comprehensive $25 million campaign, The Forest to Cities Campaign, completing about a third of the financial goal. The onset of Covid-19 necessitated a pause in campaign activity and a recently secured USDA grant has also had an impact on the scale, case for support and timeline of this campaign. This represents an opportunity for a Chief Development Officer to develop and launch a new campaign focused on NEFF’s 30 Percent Solution and securing significant support for the Exemplary Forestry Center, which will drive forward regional and national efforts to combat climate change.

Priorities for development for the next several years include:

• Growing unrestricted donations to support organizational initiatives
• Growing the number of annual contributors
• Building and launching a new 30 Percent Solution campaign

This is a prime moment for a mission-oriented and skilled fundraiser to join a vibrant and growing organization.

About the Position

The Chief Development Officer (CDO) will report to the Executive Director and work collaboratively and think creatively with members of the NEFF development office and senior staff, the Campaign Leadership Team, and the Board of Directors. They will manage a team of four and lead all aspects of the fundraising program, with a focus on growing the base of support and increasing major giving.

Working at both the strategic and tactical level, the CDO will use their skills and experience to help secure higher levels of giving, engage new donors, manage a robust portfolio of current supporters, offer strong leadership to a motivated team, and ensure that metrics and best practices are in place to guide NEFF’s fundraising work. They will be inspired by the work of the program staff and will partner with senior leadership and volunteers in deepening donor engagement.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership

• Partner with the Executive Director and Board in taking NEFF’s philanthropy program to new levels, particularly with individual major gifts.
• Provide leadership for all facets of the development team including planning, goal setting, implementation strategies, staff investments and ROI, achievement and performance measures, and volunteer engagement.
• Serve as a strategy partner and member of NEFF’s senior leadership team.
• Participate at meetings of the Board of Directors and select Board committees to provide advice and counsel, and report on development related issues and operations.

Fundraising

• Manage top philanthropic relationships via a portfolio of leading individual and institutional donors and prospects.
• Work with the Development Committee, Board of Directors, and other staff to manage campaign prospects and ongoing major donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
• Assist in strategizing and implementing cultivation and recognition events.
• Implement donor stewardship and transition strategies to ensure campaign supporters are well engaged with NEFF moving forward.

Management and Mentorship

• Continually assess the fundraising program and evaluate department performance to ensure optimal achievement of philanthropic capacity for NEFF.
• Develop strong and collaborative working relationships with the senior leadership and program staff of NEFF to understand the organization’s mission, impact, and work to
• Supervise 4 direct reports (Development Manager, Development/Communications Specialist, Development Associate, and Executive Assistant).
• Prepare and oversee the management of the annual Development budget.

Key Qualifications

• Minimum of five years of development experience, preferably in the areas of major gift fundraising and managing components of a capital campaign.
• Track record of securing major gifts at the six-figure+ level.
• Keen interest in conservation, forest ecology, and the environment required.
• Highly organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated, creative, strategic, professional, and able to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
• Excellent analytic and strategic-thinking skills.
• Superior written and verbal communication and listening skills, including editing and proofreading.
• A collaborative colleague dedicated to working as a member of a team.
• “Can do” spirit and a sense of humor.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Experience with Raiser’s Edge a plus.

Position Summary

The CSC Project & Grants Coordinator will support the project team in their on-the-ground implementation of the program. Location is flexible across the New England region, but there is a preference for a physical presence in NEFF’s main office located in Littleton, Massachusetts.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Manage all grant administration for the CSC program and other relevant NEFF programs, including all interface with the USDA.
• Manage all contracting with sub-awardees, partners, contractors etc.
• Manage project finances under the direct supervision of NEFF’s Director of Finance & Administration.
• Coordinate and project implementation within NEFF and across project contractors and partners through development and use of project management software.
• Provide support to project team for scheduling of meetings and other tasks as needed.

Experience & Requirements

• At least three years’ experience providing administration/support to complex multi-faceted projects.
• Grants management experience with a particular focus on federal grant administration.

Position Summary

The Climate-Smart Wood Sourcing Specialist will work with NEFF forestry team and the CSC project team to develop a robust climate-smart wood products supply chain in New England and help document and communicate the resulting climate benefits. This will include outreach to support the expanded use of wood as a climate-smart material and sharing of the pilot tools developed through this project. The primary focus of this position is to determine verifiable and actionable criteria for sourcing climate-smart wood materials for high- and low-grade markets and to bring these criteria into existing certification systems to encourage adoption at scale. Work will be conducted in coordination with project partners, integrated across project areas as needed, and incorporated with the ongoing work of NEFF’s Exemplary Forestry Center.

The Climate-Smart Wood Sourcing Specialist will work under the direction of NEFF’s Forest Bioeconomy Initiative Director and integrate with the ongoing work of NEFF’s Exemplary Forestry Center. Location is flexible across the New England region, but regular presence at NEFF’s Prouty Woods facility located in Littleton, MA will be a significant component of the position.

Duties & Responsibilities

Develop Climate-Smart Wood Criteria

• Contribute to the development of climate-smart forest management criteria to complement existing forest certification programs and to enable climate-smart wood sourcing in the marketplace.
• Engage and collaborate with green building and forest certification entities to encourage adoption of a climate-smart sourcing guidance framework at scale.
• Understand and engage with low-value wood market opportunities to advance climate smart wood sourcing.

Develop & Document the Climate-Smart Wood Supply Chain in New England

• Integrate with existing scalable methods for traceability and point-of-origin tracking through the supply chain to document and market the value-add of climate-smart wood to the consumer (and/or develop NEFF pilot projects for traceability of climate smart wood.).
• Work collaboratively with project partners to collect and organize data on the quantity, quality, volume, etc. of harvested wood products produced from the forest management practices implemented through NEFF’s CSC project.
• Support the quantification and reporting of the carbon profile of harvested wood products produced through NEFF’s CSC project.
• Define and develop verifiable and actionable criteria for sourcing climate-smart wood materials for building construction, including assessment of how criteria dovetail with existing forest certification systems (e.g. FSC) and green building certification systems (e.g. LEED).

Pilot Climate-Smart Sourcing in the Mass Timber Sector

• Integrate climate-smart sourcing criteria with the mass timber design study and technical guidance framework being developed through NEFF’s CSC project (with a focus on the affordable housing sector).
• Pilot the climate-smart sourcing criteria and guidance framework developed through the mass timber building projects advanced through NEFF’s CSC project.
• Working collaboratively with project partners, conduct targeted outreach and provide technical assistance to mass timber market participants (i.e. developers, universities, architects, others) to expand the use of mass timber as a climate-smart building material and to share the pilot tools developed through NEFF’s CSC project.

Experience & Requirements

• Familiarity with New England’s forest ecosystems and forest industry.
• Master’s Degree in forestry/forest science, or architecture, engineering, or related field, with at least 2-5 years of experience in the sustainable forestry, wood products, and/or building sectors.
• A passion for climate change action in the forest and/or building sector, with a clear understanding of the role of forests and wood products as a climate solution.
• Familiarity with typical tools and techniques for monitoring and reporting the GHG profile of building materials, especially wood products (e.g. EDPs, LCAs).
• Working knowledge of wood product supply chains.
• Existing network within the New England forestry, wood products and/or building sectors desirable.
• Familiarity with mass timber construction and/or manufacturing and understanding of the related supply chain issues is a plus.

Position Summary

The Biometrician will be intimately involved with all forest-centered analytical work needed to implement NEFF’s Climate-Smart Commodities grant, such as quantifying the carbon benefits of the forestry practices incentivized through the grant, assessing the potential for leakage of climate impacts; as well as analyzing statistics for avoiding the problem of leakage, and conducting other analyses as needed.

NEFF works to inform public policymakers, the forestry and climate-related community, and other forestry professionals with statistical analysis and modeling relevant to improving forest management in New England. The biometrician will have primary responsibility for these analyses. NEFF also synthesizes forestry and other natural resource information to advance improved forest management in the region. The principal example of this work to date is the Exemplary Forestry standards for the Acadian Forest and the companion standards for Central and Transition Hardwoods. NEFF also seeks to advance improved forest management in New England and beyond by publishing original research, syntheses of current science, and scientific commentary in relevant and influential publications, including peer-reviewed journals.

Duties & Responsibilities

The Biometrician will be principally responsible for NEFF’s statistical analyses and modeling to support all the organization’s analytic and forestry-related research efforts. The biometrician will be responsible for a dynamic program including research on new issues that arise, writing draft articles for publication, and contributing to syntheses to advance improved forest management.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Modeling of forest growth in response to different silvicultural prescriptions.
• Contributing to modeling financial returns from different styles of forest management.
• Conducting statistical analysis.
• Contributing to refining and promoting Exemplary Forestry.
• Developing strong partnerships with other organizations working to advance improved forest management.
• Building relationships with the NGO community, foresters, and the forest products industry.
• Contributing to and supporting the development of the science components of a new Center that has been created within NEFF to advance the cause of Exemplary Forestry.
• Research for reports and articles, including drafting at least one article per year on the most important related topics for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Skills & Experience

• In-depth knowledge of databases on forestry issues, including Forest Inventory and Analysis data from the US Forest Service.

All areas of work will be conducted in coordination with project partners and based on expert inputs across project elements. Work will also be integrated with the ongoing work of NEFF’s Exemplary Forestry Center.

The CSC Program Forester will work under the direction of NEFF’s Senior Science and Policy Fellow and in close partnership with the Exemplary Forestry Program – Senior Forester. Work under this position will be integrated with the ongoing work of NEFF’s Exemplary Forestry Center. Location is flexible across the New England region, but regular presence in Maine will be a significant component of the position.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Support NEFF’s overall Exemplary Forestry program towards our vision of implementing Exemplary Forestry practices across New England in service of climate and ecological outcomes.
• Support strong relationships with forestland owners to support adoption of Exemplary Forestry principles and practice.
• Support and conduct pertinent forestry research projects.
• Familiarity and experience with forestry issues in the southern New England region.
• Specific roles related to NEFF’s Climate Smart Commodities Partnership include:
  • Support outreach to and engagement of participating forest landowners – with a focus on smaller and southern New England forestlands.
  • Outreach to and engagement of foresters and loggers in understanding, supporting and implementing the climate smart forestry protocols for the project.

  • Document on-the-ground implementation of required climate smart forestry practices under the program in coordination with the project team and GHG monitoring partners.
  • Support development of long-term monitoring protocols designed to be deployed beyond the five-year project term to fulfil the forest management and carbon outcomes of the program.

Experience & Requirements

• Familiarity with New England’s forest ecosystems and forest industry.
• Master’s Degree in forestry or forest science with at least five years of experience working on natural resource and/or climate mitigation issues.

About the Position

The Exemplary Forestry Program – Senior Forester will be a key member of NEFF’s senior leadership team to design, implement, monitor and assess implementation of NEFF’s Exemplary Forestry vision and programs. This position will work directly with NEFF staff, external partners and forest landowners to support on-the-ground implementation of our overall Exemplary Forestry program objectives.

A primary focus of this position will be design and implementation of NEFF’s USDA-funded Climate Smart Commodities Partnership project as integrated with the ongoing work of NEFF’s Exemplary Forestry Center. Work will touch on each of the three main areas of NEFF’s CSC program including design and implementation of climate smart incentives; monitoring, verification and reporting; and support for climate smart sourcing for wood markets. All areas of work will be conducted in coordination with project partners and based on expert inputs across project elements.

The Exemplary Forestry Program – Senior Forester will work under the direction of NEFF’s Senior Forest Science and Policy Fellow as integrated with the ongoing work of NEFF’s Exemplary Forestry Center. Location is flexible across the New England region, but regular presence in Maine will be a significant component of the position.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Participate in the leadership for NEFF’s overall Exemplary Forestry program to design, implement, assess and monitor progress towards our vision of implementing Exemplary Forestry practices across New England in service of climate and ecological outcomes.
• Create and utilize strong relationships with forestland owners to support adoption of Exemplary Forestry principles and practice.
• Define, inform and conduct pertinent research projects.
• Specific roles related to NEFF’s Climate Smart Commodities Partnership include:
  • Assess site eligibility, build understanding of the program, engage prospective participants, and maintain working relationships.
  • Engage foresters and loggers in understanding, supporting and implementing the climate smart forestry protocols for the project.
  • Work with project team and partners to develop the landowner incentive payment program(s) designed to enable forestland owners to implement climate smart forest practices under this CSC program.
  • Participate in the design and execution of contractual agreements with landowners to achieve the intended goals of the CSC incentive payments.
  • Define and develop long-term monitoring protocols designed to be deployed beyond the 5-year project term to fulfil the forest management and carbon outcomes of the program.
  • Develop climate smart wood sourcing criteria to complement existing forest certification programs and to enable climate-smart wood sourcing in the marketplace.

Experience & Requirements

• Familiarity with New England’s forest ecosystems and forest industry.
• Master’s Degree in forestry or forest science with at least ten years of experience working on natural resource and/or climate mitigation issues.

The focus of this new position at NEFF will be to tap into the bill’s $40 billion dollars in forest-focused investments that are intended to bolster sustainable forest management and forest-climate solutions. In addition, the focus of this position will include tapping into other existing federal and state programs oriented towards supporting climate-smart forestry and the bioeconomy in New England’s forests and forest products and better protect human and natural communities from climate impacts.

The Government Grants Writer will be well positioned to leverage NEFF’s existing strong position based on a long track record of successful federal fundraising from a diversity of programs. Position Summary

The Outreach Manager will work with the project team and smaller non-commercial woodland owners and land trusts to support on-the-ground implementation of and participation in the program. Duties & Responsibilities

• Outreach to and engagement of smaller-parcel forestland owners to assess site eligibility, build understanding of the program, enroll prospective participants, and maintain relationships.
• Develop an outreach and messaging toolbox to communicate via various methods (websites, mailings, in-person events) with landowners and land trusts about the program’s benefits and requirements.
• Work with project team to design a program to identify applicants and award funding by 2024 for up to three mini-pilot landowner outreach regions across New England which will employ innovative methods or be working to reach underserved individuals and communities.
• Engage land trusts and conservation partnerships as project partners to conduct systematic outreach to small-acreage woodland owners across the region. Remain in touch with regional partners throughout the course of the project to support diffusion of successful outreach methods and share lessons learned.
• Organize and host forester training workshops to equip foresters to implement the climate-smart forest practices defined through this project and work with enrolled landowners.

This position will be responsible for developing forest management plans including annual harvesting plans for NEFF lands as well as supervising consulting foresters for management and harvesting operations. The Staff Forester will also be responsible for implementing NEFF’s Exemplary Forestry standards across NEFF’s lands, interfacing with NEFF’s forestry team to connect on opportunities to demonstrate sourcing of climate smart wood supply for pilot projects across the region. The Staff Forester will also manage existing and future carbon projects on NEFF forestlands and pursue new carbon opportunities as they emerge. Position Summary

This position is a full-time role (37.5 hours per week) helping to advance the Woodlands Partnership of Northwest Massachusetts—established as Mohawk Trail Woodlands Partnership (MTWP) by 2018 state law—a regional collaboration focused on conservation and economic development that sustains the area’s forests and natural resources while enhancing the rural way of life for its residents. This position reports to the Woodlands Partnership’s Administrative Agent based at NEFF, funded through a state contract extending at least until June 2025, with the possibility of extension. This role will combine direct administrative and operational coordination of the Partnership’s 31-member board and standing committees, as well as communications/public relations, and grant-writing, budgeting and reporting in support of the Partnership’s high-priority programs.

Principal Responsibilities

• Communicating with members of a large Board of Directors, representing municipalities, regional organizations and state and federal agencies, as well as Committee Chairs, for meeting scheduling and event planning logistics.
• Work with the Partnership Board to set priorities for implementation of the 2023 10-year Partnership Plan and coordinate researching and drafting funding proposals to support implementation of the Plan.
