30 Percent Solution, Exemplary Forestry, Fun and Beautiful

Fun, Informative Exemplary Forestry Video Debuts

A scene from the video

The sun cresting over Maine mountains at dawn, an American Marten exploring its habitat, wandering woodland streams, and so much more — NEFF’s new Exemplary Forestry explainer video is truly a sight to see.

As an explainer video, it’s designed to be a fun, fascinating experience that helps viewers gain a holistic understanding of Exemplary Forestry, NEFF’s landscape-scale approach to sustainable and climate-smart forestry. Among other things, NEFF staff made sure the video had a top-notch script, animated sequences that could explain complex concepts, and engaging footage of beautiful and well-managed Maine forests, primarily filmed by videographer Lauren Owens Lambert.

The Bioeconomy

Did you catch the mention of the bioeconomy around minute 2:45 in the video?

The bioeconomy consists of economic activities that use renewable, well-stewarded biological resources like wood to produce goods, energy and services. To demonstrate what a bio-based future could look like in New England, we want to highlight one innovative wood product featured in the video and manufactured in Maine: viewers see a close-up of a BioHome3D house made by the University of Maine’s Advanced Structures & Composites Center. These 3D-printed structures are made with 20 percent wood components, and in this case, finely ground and regionally sourced pine wood. Not only is this a win for using residual or low-grade pine wood, but it also provides a unique solution for meeting affordable housing need in the region. Pretty cool, right?

Spreading the Word About Exemplary Forestry

NEFF has ambitious goals for New England’s working forests and what they can accomplish for our climate, but to make these goals reality, NEFF needs more people to be aware of Exemplary Forestry and support its use.

These ambitions stem from NEFF’s 30 Percent Solution, which combines four forest-based climate solutions, including Exemplary Forestry, at a regional scale. By taking these solutions region-wide, NEFF can provide nearly one-third of the reduction in energy-related CO2 emissions — meaning, emissions from fossil-fuel combustion — New England needs by 2050 while also benefiting wildlife and biodiversity.

Of the 30 Percent Solution’s four forest-based climate solutions, most of the savings come from spreading the practice of Exemplary Forestry. The entire 30 Percent Solution could pull more than 646 million metric tons (0.65 gigatons) of CO2 out of the atmosphere over the next thirty years, and 542 million metric tons comes just from spreading the use of Exemplary Forestry and similar climate-smart forestry approaches in New England. Exemplary Forestry is an incredibly powerful tool in the fight against climate change, and NEFF’s new explainer video is one of many ways we’re getting the word out about it.
